FETC introduced RFID-based eTag technology in May 2012 as Taiwan's freeway toll collection system. Till to date, eTag has accomplished 94% usage rate, and more than 6.3 million vehicles have equipped eTag sticker.eTag + ETC were integrated as a total toll collection system, its services includes:
● License plate recognition.
● Toll payment and top-up ETC. Currently, there are about 14.7 million ETC transactions per day.
● Tolling accuracy rate over 99.99%
● 99.8% of vehicle detection accuracy rate.
● Data use for traffic network planning and management operations.
● Carry out function of electronic road pricing (ERP).
Taiwan’s freeway is the best trial of ETC system; currently more than 6.3 million vehicles are equipped with eTag. eTag has accomplished 94% usage rate. Every day, there around 14 million of transactions per day and only 100 thousand of transactions are manually handled.
After the implementation of distance-based electronic toll collection, our government can charge the tolling fee according to different time period and road section, as the mean of achieving traffic management.
Freeway users passing through the section of previous toll stations no longer need to slow down. The driving time and areas of traffic congestion are reduced while the overall vehicle flow is improved significantly. Statistics shows that one way journey from Taipei to Kaohsiung (about 350 kilometers) can now save at least 10 minutes in average or nearly 20 minutes during off-peak hours.
Also, it is estimated that from December 30, 2013 to August 15, 2015, the total saving of 150 million liters of gasoline. The reduction of CO2 emissions by car braking, can be saved as many as 35 tones.
