Taiwan to Launch Digital ID Card in 2020

On December 27th, 2018, Minister of National Development Council (NDC), Dr. Chen Mei-ling said in order to promote the digital transformation in Taiwan and elevate the efficiency of public services, the Taiwan Digital ID Card (New eID) will be fully distributed in the second half of 2020.

Dr. Chen Mei-ling also said that the Integrated Circuit (IC) ID is just a “Key” integrated with the Citizen Digital Certificate without any data storage. Based on the technology of blockchain or code, it allows different departments to access necessary information through the government backbone network. The eID will only be used for identification purposes and would not be prone to the problem of infringement of personal privacy, she explained.

Dr. Chen Mei-ling added that Taiwan has been promoting the E-government for a long time. The policies of the Internet Tax Declaration and E-invoice have received the most positive feedback from the citizens. In face of the era of the digital economy, digital identity recognition is the key for government intellectualization.
