2017 Smart City Taipei Declaration ─ Director, Office of Global Affairs, Toluca, Mexico, Claudia Ruiz Bastida

The rest of the world stopped referring to Latin America as “the Third-World” and you give us the new name of “emerging economy.”

The rest of the world stopped referring to Latin America as “the Third-World” and you give us the new name of “emerging economy.” We think that you have a very special point there in giving us that name. And we think that we can use that for our partnership.

Smart cities such as Taipei need smart workers such as those produced in Mexico. Toluca is a relatively large city with a population of 1 million and of that number 25,000 are students. This means that our population has many young people studying in universities.80% of our population of young people enrolls into a university, graduating with master and doctorate degrees. This means that we have qualified workers and a solid manufacturing base. We have two clusters of manufacturing: cars and pharmaceuticals. What we have now is not enough. But what we do have are smart people in Toluca who want to be a part of the global economy and take advantage of its opportunities. Please come to Mexico and adopt us!
